In 2025, Akram made his debut with Gauthier Dance – Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart to develop Turning of Bones over nearly three seasons. The title refers to the Madagascan ritual Famadihana, in which ancestors’ remains are exhumed, rewrapped, carried and danced with as an act of remembrance and reconnection.
The work draws on five AKC productions, all warning that human blindness and arrogance can perpetuate mistakes throughout history. Material from Vertical Road (2010), iTMOi (2013), Jungle Book reimagined, DESH’s “head dance” and Mud of Sorrow (2021) have been reworked into a new structure.
Binding the scenes into a cohesive whole is an original score by Aditya Prakash and a narrative: the tragic story of two lovers confronting sacrifice and being sacrificed.
A final two-week residency at Orsolina28 Art Foundation in Moncalvo provided an ideal setting for rehearsals ahead of the World Premiere.
