Moving Stories - The Teacher Training Programme

With the support of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Teacher Development Fund, we are very excited to be curating a programme for schools in Tower Hamlets, London.

Moving Stories – The Teacher Training Programme works with a small cohort of teachers and their students over two years, introducing the Akram Khan Company approach of dance, making and storytelling to teachers and supporting them to become leaders of dance in their own schools. Working in partnership with each school, we are exploring how to contextualise dance for primary education, and together with the teachers, we are discovering new ways to connect it to the curriculum in a meaningful way. From 2022/23 alone, we delivered over 90 in-school sessions, reaching 10 class teachers and around 300 children in Tower Hamlets.

Dance has the potential to excite, challenge and connect children to their learning in new and creative ways. Movement is a universal language and this project will examine how dance can deepen understanding, bridge gaps from the classroom environment and bring learning to life. We believe that you do not need to be a dance specialist to teach a really brilliant dance lesson. We work alongside class teachers to share ideas and concepts around dance and movement that encourage imagination and bring a playful energy to their students’ learning.
